Why Your Outlet Isn’t Working: A Guide by Veteran Air

September 7, 2023 by [email protected]

Owning a home comes with a load of responsibilities. Maintaining the electrical system is crucial, not just for convenience, but for safety. When an outlet stops working, it can cause frustration and concern. With our extensive experience in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing solutions, Veteran Air is here to help you get to the bottom of why this may be happening.

The Most Common Culprits

Before you try looking into DIY solutions or call in the professionals, it helps to know what might be behind your malfunctioning outlet.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Even if other outlets in the room work, the non-functioning one might be on a different circuit. This is because homes are wired in such a way that different sections or rooms might have separate circuits to prevent overloading. Check your breaker panel; if you see any switches out of alignment, it might be the reason. Sometimes, high-energy appliances or power surges can cause the breaker to trip, cutting off power to specific outlets.

Burned Out Outlets

Just like any other household item, outlets too have a lifespan. Over time, outlets can wear out, especially if they’re frequently used or are subjected to excessive load. If an outlet appears burnt, has discoloration, or emits a burning smell, it indicates damage to the internal components and needs immediate attention. It’s essential to replace such outlets promptly to prevent potential fire hazards.

Loose Wiring

A disconnected wire can lead to an outlet failing. This disconnection can occur due to natural vibrations in the home, significant temperature fluctuations causing expansion and contraction, or even from an initial installation that wasn’t up to par. Loose wires can be dangerous; not only do they disrupt the power flow, but they can also cause sparks or short circuits, risking electrical fires.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Issues

The GFCI is a safety device, primarily found in areas where water sources are nearby, like bathrooms and kitchens. A GFCI outlet monitors the electricity flow, and if it detects an imbalance, it quickly shuts off power, preventing potential shocks. This “imbalance” is often a potentially hazardous ground fault. If your GFCI outlet stops working, it might have tripped to protect you. Pressing the reset button might restore its function, but if it frequently trips, you might want to consult an electrician to check for underlying issues.

Signs It’s Time to Call a Professional

It’s essential to recognize when a problem is beyond a simple fix, as dealing with electrical issues can be risky. Here are signs that it’s time to contact an expert:

Persistent Problems: If an outlet repeatedly causes issues or requires constant resetting, it might indicate a deeper electrical concern.

Sparks or Unusual Noises: Any sparking, popping, or buzzing from an outlet is a clear warning sign.

Physical Damage: Cracked, chipped, or broken outlets can be a hazard. They can expose wires and pose the threat of electrical shocks or fires.

You Haven’t Had an Inspection in Over a Year:  Regular electrical inspections are vital to ensuring the safety and efficiency of your home’s electrical system. If it’s been a while since a professional checked your outlets and wiring, it might be time for a review.

Safety Comes First

While some outlet issues might seem simple, approaching them with caution is essential. Not all electrical problems are readily apparent, and unseen underlying issues can heighten risks. To stay safe, be mindful not to overload outlets by frequently plugging and unplugging devices or overusing adaptors.

If you’re working on an outlet, always use insulated tools to avoid shocks, and particularly for outlets near water sources like in kitchens or bathrooms, always ensure both your hands and tools are dry.
